Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Election 2026: 403 Candidates to Contest Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Elections 2026 Across 24 Constituencies

GILGIT, June 2: The Election Commission on Tuesday released the final list of candidates for the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly General Elections 2026, confirming that a total of 403 candidates will contest elections across the region’s 24 constituencies.

According to the official data, 272 candidates are contesting as independents, while 131 candidates are representing various political parties. The figures reflect a strong presence of independent candidates in the electoral race, alongside participation from major national and regional political parties.

Among the political parties, the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) has fielded the highest number of candidates with 23 contestants, followed closely by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with 22 candidates. The Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) has nominated 15 candidates, while the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) has fielded 11 candidates.

Other parties participating in the elections include Islami Tehreek Pakistan and the Pakistan Nazriyati Party, each with 10 candidates, followed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) with nine candidates. Majlis Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen (MWM) has nominated seven candidates, while Jamaat-e-Islami and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have fielded six candidates each. The Awami Workers Party is represented by four candidates.

Constituency-wise statistics indicate that GBA-2 Gilgit-II is expected to witness the most competitive contest, with 40 candidates competing for a single seat. It is followed by GBA-14 Astore-II, where 33 candidates are in the race. In contrast, GBA-24 Ghanche-III has the smallest field, with only six candidates contesting.

The final candidate list also highlights the limited participation of women in the electoral process. Out of the total 403 candidates, only eight women are contesting the elections. Of these, five are independent candidates, while one candidate each represents the Pakistan Peoples Party, Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party, and Pakistan National Party.

Following the publication of the final list, election campaigns have intensified across Gilgit-Baltistan. Political parties and independent candidates have accelerated their outreach efforts, leading to increased political activity throughout the region as voters prepare to head to the polls.
